TAC strengthens protection for mobile access through one-time passwords
MARLBOROUGH, MA – June 19, 2019 – PortSys®, a global innovator in information security and zero trust access control for the enterprise, today announced that Total Access Control™ (TAC) now supports Google’s One-Time Password (OTP) two-factor authentication support for mobile applications.
Two-factor authentication adds an additional layer of security to an account’s log-in, offering greater protection against attacks or unauthorized access. TAC’s OTP is more secure than a user-generated password, protecting users who still often rely on the same password for multiple applications.
Google Authenticator is a software-based authenticator that implements two-step verification services using the time-based OTP algorithm and HMAC-based OTP algorithm, for authenticating users of mobile applications. HMAC is a hash-based message authentication code involving a cryptographic hash function and a secret cryptographic key.
Since an OTP is valid for only one log-in session, it prevents replay attacks that organizations can suffer when static usernames and passwords are used to log in for a session through a mobile application.
“Stolen or weak passwords account for more than 80 percent of hacking related breaches,” said Michael Oldham, CEO of PortSys. “TAC combines user credentials, Google Authenticator and other factors surrounding the user’s context of access with a robust policy engine. This enables organizations to ensure only those who are supposed to get access to specific resources are authorized to do so.”
